DEAR COUNSELLOR CONNECT

" I've tried to talk to my mom about her new boyfriend, who I think just doesn't treat my mother very well. My dad died 2 years ago, and I know
she's been lonely but I don't think this is the guy for her. How do I make her listen?

Sad and Confused, Oregon

Dear Sad and confused

You sound like a pretty empathic person and your mom is lucky to have
you support her. You don't say how old you are, but we know talking to parents can be difficult. We wonder what would happen if you started off
your conversation with her telling her that it must have been difficult for her and lonely in the past couple of years. Rather than, start with
your concerns. She may be more willing to listen to your concerns after that. If that doesn't work, then try your local boys and girls clubs
they often have groups for parents and teens and they might be able to help you. Keep trying -
